Before you jump into using pay-per-click advertising to promote your affiliate marketing website you need to know how the system works. It sounds pretty basic – pay 20cents per click and sell a $17 item, right? That makes sense. But let’s take a look at what really happens before you do something really, really wrong.

You’ve done your keyword research and you’re absolutely positive you’ve got exactly the right words to attract exactly the traffic you want. They’re going to be begging to buy your product when they hit that sales page. And now you’re going to pay 20cents per click to attract that traffic.

The average conversion rate in the industry right now is 1 to 2% – not as high as you might think, huh? That conversion rate means that you’re going to have to have 8,000 visitors to your site in order to get just 80 orders. And if you paid 20cents each time one of those visitors clicked on your ad, that means you paid $1600 in pay-per-click fees to get those 80 orders.
